This weekend, I went to the Family Farmed Expo at the Chicago Cultural Center. Newleaf Natural Grocery, the company that runs my produce delivery service, had a booth there, so it was nice to meet them and tell them how much I enjoy their products. I also got to sample a lot of food – mostly organic cheeses, breads and dips. Most of it was pretty good, but I was disappointed to discover that pistachio butter doesn’t taste like anything and honey wine tastes a little funky.
I also saw cooking demonstrations by Gale Gand and Rick Bayless. They were both great. They both talked a little bit about being on the Food Network (Gand has her own show, Sweet Dreams, and Bayless was recently a guest on Emeril’s show). Gand was saying that the Food Network discourages chefs from giving measurements when they’re making a recipe, forcing people to visit the Web site. I guess that’s not really surprising. I wouldn’t want to sit there taking notes while a watch a cooking show, even if they did. But, still, kind of interesting.
Anyway, on to this week’s produce box:
- Kale
- Bunch spinach
- Green onions
- Yams
- Mushrooms
- Tomatoes
- Red Valencia oranges
- Lemons
- Kiwi
- Granny Smith apples
- Bananas
